Selecting Load Cells for Machinery and Industrial Equipment

Load cells installed at the support points of machinery, tanks and production equipment enable weight and process loads to be measured directly within the machine structure. Depending on the application, standard load cells, hygienic compression load cells, compatible stainless steel levelling feet and complete pre-matched sets are available.

Important selection criteria include the rated load at each support point, connection thread, protection class and required hygiene standard. The total machine or tank weight should not simply be divided equally by the number of load cells, as the centre of gravity, filling level and dynamic process forces can create different loads at the individual support points.

For hygienically sensitive production areas, the cleanability of the load cell, cable connection and levelling foot must also be considered. How Compression Load Cells Measure Weight

Compression load cells measure the force applied vertically through a machine, tank or industrial structure. When the load cell is subjected to weight, its measuring element undergoes a very small deformation. This change is converted into an electrical signal that can be processed by the connected weighing electronics.

Installing load cells directly at the machine support points allows weight, filling quantities and process loads to be monitored without a separate weighing platform. Reliable measurement requires controlled force transmission and a mechanically suitable installation of all load cells.

Selecting the Correct Rated Load

The rated load of a load cell must be selected according to the maximum load at each individual support point. The empty weight of the machine or tank, the maximum filling quantity and additional process forces must all be included in the calculation.

The total weight should not simply be divided by the number of load cells. An offset centre of gravity, uneven filling or dynamic operating forces can place a greater load on individual measuring points. An appropriate safety margin should therefore be included without selecting a measuring range that is unnecessarily large.

Standard Load Cells for Industrial Applications

Standard load cells provide a robust solution for weight measurement in machinery, conveyor systems, automation equipment and industrial weighing systems. Different rated loads and connection threads allow the measuring component to be matched to both compact equipment and larger machine constructions.

The IP67 versions are suitable for many conventional industrial environments in which protection against dust and temporary exposure to moisture is required. The installation dimensions, electrical connection and environmental conditions should be checked against the technical data before use.

Their stainless steel construction, hygienically designed sealing areas and IP69K protection make them suitable for demanding applications in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

The 3-A-certified versions are available in different thread sizes and rated loads. When selecting a hygienic load cell, the cleaning method, operating temperature, cleaning agents and mechanical installation must be considered in addition to the required measuring range.

Hygienic Feet and Complete Load Cell Sets

Compatible hygienic feet for compression load cells provide a stable and height-adjustable connection between the measuring element and the floor. They support precise machine alignment while creating a cleanable stainless steel contact surface.

Complete sets consisting of a load cell and hygienic levelling foot simplify the selection of mechanically compatible components. The thread size, rated load, foot dimensions and installation height must nevertheless match the machine construction and operating load.
