Knurled screws & knurled nuts
These operating elements enable quick and precise adjustment without additional tools. They offer high grip, are durable and ideal for industrial and mechanical applications.
Stainless Steel Knurled Screws and Knurled Nuts
Knurled screws and knurled nuts allow machine components to be fastened, released and adjusted manually without using an additional tool. The textured gripping surface provides a clearly defined operating area and is particularly suitable for connections that are adjusted, removed or repositioned regularly.
MOVET supplies stainless steel knurled thumb screws and knurled nuts made from AISI 304. Their sandblasted finish creates a uniform matt appearance and supports secure manual operation. Different threads, grip diameters, heights and collar designs allow the operating element to be matched to the machine construction.
Knurled Screw or Knurled Nut?
A knurled screw has an external threaded stud and is screwed into a female thread in the machine component. It can be used to secure covers, adjustable stops, guides, fixtures and other components that must be released or repositioned by hand.
A knurled nut has an internal thread and is screwed onto an existing threaded stud or spindle. It is suitable for constructions where the stud remains permanently attached to the machine and the connection must be accessible from the outside.
| Design | Thread type | Typical function |
|---|---|---|
| Knurled screw | External threaded stud | Screws into an existing female thread |
| Knurled nut | Internal thread | Screws onto an existing threaded stud |
Select Knurled Screws by Thread and Dimensions
The selected knurled screw or nut must match both the existing thread and the available operating and installation space. The following table summarises the main product characteristics currently available in the MOVET range:
| Selection feature | Available options | Selection guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Thread | M5, M6, M8 or M10 | Must correspond to the female thread or existing threaded stud |
| Grip diameter | 20, 24 or 30 mm | A larger diameter provides a wider manually operated gripping surface |
| Overall height | 5 to 53 mm | Check the available installation space and external projection |
| Material | AISI 304 stainless steel | Suitable for many industrial and moisture-exposed applications |
| Surface finish | Sandblasted | Creates a uniform matt surface and textured grip |
| Design | With or without collar | Compare the contact surface and installation geometry |
Before ordering, compare the thread size, thread length, grip diameter, overall height and collar design with the technical drawing. The thread designation alone is not sufficient, as knurled thumb screws with the same nominal thread may have different stud lengths and overall dimensions.
M5, M6, M8 and M10 Knurled Thumb Screws
Compact M5 knurled screws are suitable for smaller fastening and adjustment points with limited installation space. The MOVET range includes M5 stainless steel thumb screws with a 20 mm grip diameter as well as matching knurled nuts with an M5 female thread.
M6 knurled screws and nuts provide a medium-sized option for many machine, fixture and automation applications. M8 and M10 versions offer larger threads for correspondingly dimensioned connections. However, the nominal thread size alone does not determine the permissible load of the complete assembly.
Thread engagement, material of the mating component, manual tightening force and operating loads must also be considered. A hand-tightened knurled screw should not automatically be used for safety-critical or highly dynamically loaded connections.
Knurled Screws and Nuts with a Collar
A knurled screw with a collar has an additional shoulder between the grip and threaded stud. Depending on the design, the collar provides a defined contact area and separates the gripping section from the threaded connection.
Knurled nuts are also available with a collar. This can increase the area resting against the adjacent component and support accurate positioning. Whether a version with or without a collar is suitable depends on the bore diameter, available contact surface, installation space and intended assembly position.
The collar should not be regarded as a captive fastening, spacer or automatic locking device unless the complete connection has been specifically designed for that function. Where vibration could loosen the component, an appropriate additional locking method may be required.
Tool-Free Fastening and Repeated Adjustment
Knurled thumb screws are primarily used where a connection must be opened, closed or adjusted repeatedly by hand. Typical applications include adjustable stops, guides, protective covers, fixtures, measuring equipment and replaceable machine components.
The round knurled head can be operated without a screwdriver or spanner, helping to simplify setup, adjustment and maintenance work. This requires the connection to be designed for manual operation and not to depend on an accurately specified tightening torque.
Where a larger grip or increased manual leverage is required, stainless steel star knobs may provide a suitable alternative. The choice should be based on operating frequency, available space and the required manual force.
AISI 304 Knurled Fasteners for Industrial Environments
MOVET knurled screws and knurled nuts are manufactured from AISI 304 stainless steel. This material provides corrosion resistance for many applications in mechanical engineering, plant construction and automation technology and can also be used in numerous moisture-exposed production environments.
Actual resistance depends on moisture, operating temperature, cleaning agents, chlorides and other substances present in the application. AISI 304 stainless steel is therefore not universally resistant to every chemical or corrosive environment.
Where the components are cleaned regularly, the threaded area, knurled surface and contact faces should be inspected for deposits and damage. Contaminated or damaged threads can impair smooth manual operation and reduce reliable thread engagement.
Select and Buy Knurled Screws and Knurled Nuts
Use the product filters to narrow down the available knurled screws and nuts by thread, diameter and height. Then check the product name and technical drawing to confirm whether an external or internal thread, the required thread length, the correct collar design and suitable overall dimensions are provided.
A knurled screw and knurled nut can only be combined when the thread size, thread pitch and available engagement length correspond. The threads should be clean, undamaged and engaged to a sufficient depth for the intended fastening task.
Further manually operated machine components such as star knobs , stainless steel U-handles and other industrial machine components can be selected according to the individual operating and fastening requirements.
