Hygienic Screws for Certified Machine Components

Unsere Hygiene-Schrauben bestehen aus Edelstahl mit glatten, leicht zu reinigenden Oberflächen. Sie verhindern Schmutzablagerungen und sind ideal für Anwendungen mit hohen Hygienestandards.

Hygienic Screws for Food and Pharmaceutical Machinery

Hygienic screws are designed for removable connections in machinery and equipment where cleanability, corrosion resistance and hygienic construction are important. Typical applications include food-processing equipment, beverage production, packaging machinery, pharmaceutical systems and hygienic conveyor technology.

MOVET supplies stainless steel hygienic screws in different thread sizes, lengths and head designs. Depending on the product, versions with blue silicone or EPDM seals and certification according to the 3-A Sanitary Standard or EHEDG are available.

Why Use Hygienic Screws Instead of Standard Stainless Steel Screws?

Conventional screw heads may contain sharp transitions, recesses or areas that are difficult to access during cleaning. Moisture, product residue and cleaning chemicals can remain around these geometries. Hygienically designed screws reduce such areas through rounded contours, smooth surfaces and a defined transition between the screw head and the mounted component.

The cleanable design supports regular external cleaning and can reduce the number of potential residue-collection points on a machine. Whether a hygienic screw is required depends on the hygiene zone, cleaning process and design requirements of the complete installation.

Select Hygienic Screws by Size and Design

The selected screw must meet both the mechanical and hygienic requirements of the connection. The following table summarises the options currently available in the MOVET category:

Selection feature Available options Selection guidance
Thread M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10, M12, M16 and M20 The thread size and engagement length must match the mating component.
Screw length 6 to 100 mm Select according to the component thickness, seal and required thread engagement.
Material Stainless steel AISI 304 or AISI 316 The material should be selected according to corrosion exposure and cleaning media.
Head design Hygienic domed head or low-profile head Low-profile screws are suitable where installation height is limited.
Seal Without seal, blue silicone or blue EPDM The sealing material must be compatible with temperature and cleaning chemicals.
Certification 3-A Sanitary Standard or 3-A Sanitary Standard / EHEDG The certification must be checked for the specific article selected.

3-A- and EHEDG-Certified Hygienic Screws

Selected MOVET hygienic screws are certified in accordance with the 3-A Sanitary Standard. Additional versions are available with an EHEDG-related product specification. These screws are intended for machine designs where accessible surfaces and a reduction in difficult-to-clean areas are required.

Certification of the screw alone does not confirm that the complete machine connection is hygienically designed. Mating surfaces, threaded holes, seals, spacing and adjacent components must also remain suitable and accessible for the intended cleaning procedure.

AISI 304 or AISI 316 Hygienic Screws?

AISI 304 stainless steel is suitable for many industrial and hygiene-sensitive applications with moderate corrosion exposure. AISI 316 stainless steel provides an additional option for more demanding environments and cleaning conditions.

AISI 316 is not universally resistant to every chemical. The selection should take account of the cleaning agent, concentration, temperature, exposure time and possible chloride content. An AISI 304 hygienic screw may be sufficient for dry areas or less aggressive operating conditions.

Blue Silicone and EPDM Seals

The seal closes the transition between the hygienic screw head and the component surface. This can reduce open gaps and areas around the connection that would otherwise be difficult to clean.

Silicone and EPDM have different temperature and media-resistance characteristics. The appropriate seal must therefore be selected according to the actual operating and cleaning conditions. The blue colour provides clear visual contrast in many food-processing environments and makes a damaged or missing sealing element easier to identify.

The sealing effect also depends on the mating surface and correct installation. A damaged, contaminated or incorrectly compressed seal should be replaced before the machine is returned to operation.

Low-Profile Hygienic Screws for Limited Installation Space

Low-profile hygienic screws are suitable for installations where only limited space is available above the connection. Their flat, rounded head creates less projection from the machine surface than a conventional screw head.

MOVET supplies low-profile hygienic screws in different thread sizes and lengths, with certified and non-certified versions depending on the product. Before installation, the required mechanical strength, available space, thread engagement and permissible tightening torque must be checked.

Select and Buy Hygienic Stainless Steel Screws

Use the product filters to narrow down the hygienic screws by stainless steel grade, thread size, screw length, spanner width, sealing material and certification. Before ordering, compare the thread, length, head dimensions and seal with the technical drawing and the existing machine construction.

For a complete hygienic fastening connection, the screw, mating surface and components on the opposite side must be coordinated. Matching hygienic nuts provide a closed and cleanable fastening solution on the reverse side. Further hygienically designed screw variants can be found under hygienic bolts .
