Hygienic Nuts for Certified Machine Components
Hygienic nuts provide a closed, cleanable finish for threaded connections in food-processing, pharmaceutical and other washdown-sensitive machinery. MOVET offers stainless steel hygienic cap nuts in AISI 304 and AISI 316, including selected 3-A- and EHEDG-compliant versions with blue silicone gaskets for hygienically designed machine installations.

Hygienic Nuts for Cleanable Machine Connections
Hygienic nuts create a closed finish on threaded connections used in machinery that is cleaned regularly or installed in hygiene-sensitive production areas. Their rounded outer contour and closed cap-nut design cover the end of the screw or threaded stud and reduce exposed thread areas.
Typical applications include food-processing machinery, beverage production, pharmaceutical equipment, packaging systems and hygienic conveyor installations. MOVET supplies hygienic stainless steel nuts in different thread sizes, materials and certified designs.
Hygienic Cap Nut or Standard Hex Nut?
A conventional hex nut has an open internal thread extending through the complete component. Depending on the screw length, the end of the thread may remain exposed and can be difficult to access during cleaning. A hygienic cap nut encloses this area with a rounded, closed head.
| Nut design | Construction | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Standard hex nut | Open internal thread with a potentially exposed screw end | General industrial fastening connections |
| Stainless steel cap nut | Closed cap covering the end of the screw or threaded stud | Machine panels, frames and industrial equipment |
| Certified hygienic nut | Closed, cleanable contour, depending on the model with a hygienic gasket | Regularly cleaned and hygiene-sensitive machine areas |
Hygienic nuts should not be confused with self-locking nuts. A blue silicone gasket seals the transition to the mounting surface but does not provide an automatic locking function against loosening under vibration.
Select Hygienic Nuts by Thread and Design
The hygienic cap nut must match the external thread, available internal depth and cleaning conditions of the machine. The following table summarises the main options available in the MOVET range:
| Selection feature | Available options | Selection guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Thread | M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10, M12, M14, M16, M20, M24 and M30 | Must match the thread diameter and pitch of the screw or stud |
| Material | AISI 304 or AISI 316 stainless steel | Select according to moisture, corrosion exposure and cleaning chemicals |
| Surface finish | Polished or high-gloss polished | Check the product-specific finish and technical drawing |
| Gasket | Depending on the version, with a blue silicone gasket | Check material compatibility and the condition of the sealing element |
| Certification | 3-A Sanitary Standard or 3-A Sanitary Standard / EHEDG | Confirm the certification for the specific article selected |
The nominal thread size alone is not sufficient for selection. The internal thread depth, external nut dimensions, spanner width and available installation space must also be compared with the existing construction.
3-A Hygienic Nuts for Food and Pharmaceutical Machinery
Selected MOVET hygienic nuts are certified according to the 3-A Sanitary Standard. They are designed for fastening points where closed external surfaces and accessible transitions support regular and thorough cleaning.
Certification of an individual hygienic cap nut does not automatically confirm that the complete machine connection is hygienically designed. The screw, mounting surface, gasket, surrounding components and installation condition must also be suitable for the intended cleaning process.
Selected articles are additionally listed with an EHEDG specification. Since certification can differ by thread size, material and product version, the documentation of the exact article should always be checked before use.
AISI 304 or AISI 316 Hygienic Nuts?
AISI 304 stainless steel is suitable for many industrial and hygiene-sensitive applications with moderate corrosion exposure. It is commonly used for fasteners, machine panels and components in production environments where moisture and regular external cleaning must be considered.
AISI 316 hygienic nuts provide an alternative for more demanding cleaning and environmental conditions. The final material selection should be based on the cleaning agent, concentration, temperature, exposure time and any chloride-containing substances present in the application.
AISI 316 should not be regarded as universally resistant to every chemical. Material and certification must be checked for the specific hygienic nut, as not every thread size is necessarily available in every material version.
Blue Silicone Gasket and Polished Surface
On the corresponding 3-A versions, a blue silicone gasket closes the transition between the hygienic nut and the mounting surface. Correct installation can reduce open gaps beneath the nut in which liquids or residues could otherwise accumulate.
The blue colour provides clear visual contrast in many food and pharmaceutical production areas. A missing, damaged or incorrectly positioned gasket can therefore be easier to identify during inspection.
Selected MOVET hygienic nuts feature captive, crush-resistant gaskets and polished surfaces with a specified roughness below Ra 0.8 µm. These characteristics should be confirmed using the product-specific technical data before ordering.
Installing and Combining Hygienic Cap Nuts
The length of the screw or threaded stud must correspond to the internal depth of the cap nut. If the thread end contacts the inside of the closed cap before the nut reaches the mounting surface, the connection may not be tightened or sealed correctly.
The mounting surface should be flat, clean and free from damage. On versions with a silicone gasket, the seal must not be twisted, trapped or displaced during installation. The permissible tightening torque should be taken from the technical information for the complete fastening connection.
Hygienic nuts can be combined with matching hygienic screws to create a coordinated stainless steel fastening solution. Thread size, pitch, material, certification and available engagement length must correspond.
Select and Buy Hygienic Stainless Steel Nuts
Use the product filters to narrow down the hygienic nuts by stainless steel grade, thread, surface finish, gasket and certification. Then compare the complete product designation and technical drawing with the dimensions of the planned connection.
After installation, the nut, gasket and adjacent surfaces should be inspected regularly for loosening, damage and deposits. Material and gasket suitability should be reassessed when the cleaning agent, temperature or cleaning procedure changes.
Further products for cleanable machine connections are available under certified hygienic components . For installations without specific certification requirements, additional stainless steel cap nuts are available in different sizes and designs.
