Hygienic Seals and Gaskets for Food-Processing Machinery
Hygienic seals and gaskets close transitions, fastening points and moving component areas on machinery that is regularly cleaned or used in hygiene-sensitive production environments. Typical applications include food-processing equipment, beverage production, pharmaceutical machinery, packaging systems and hygienic conveyor technology.

Which Hygienic Seal Is Suitable for the Application?
The correct design depends on the component to be sealed, its dimensions and the required elastomer material. The following overview provides initial guidance:

3-A Sanitary Seals for Hygienic Machine Design
The hygienic gaskets in this category are specified according to the 3-A Sanitary Standard. They are intended for machine components where cleanable surfaces and transitions with as few difficult-to-access gaps as possible are required.
A 3-A hygienic seal can support the cleanable design of a connection. The complete assembly must nevertheless be considered, including the screw, machine foot, mating surface, installation space and mounting condition. Certification of an individual seal does not automatically certify the complete machine.
EPDM Sealing Washers with Stainless Steel Reinforcement
The blue EPDM sealing washers combine an elastic sealing surface with a stabilising metal insert. In the corresponding MOVET designs, the reinforcement is manufactured from AISI 316 stainless steel and vulcanised into the EPDM.
The reinforcement helps the washer retain its shape and supports accurate positioning beneath the fastening component. At the same time, the elastic EPDM area seals the transition between the fastener and the component surface.
Suitability must be assessed according to the cleaning chemicals, concentration, temperature and exposure time present in the application. Identical dimensions alone do not confirm that a sealing washer is suitable for the operating medium.
Internal and External Blue Silicone Seals
The blue silicone seals are available as internal and external versions. These descriptions refer to their intended installation positions inside or outside the sealed component area. The two designs are therefore not automatically interchangeable, even where individual dimensions appear similar.
The silicone versions are used, among other applications, as replacement seals for moving areas on 3-A hygienic machine feet. When replacing a seal, compare the type number, inner dimension, outer diameter, height and internal or external designation with the existing component.

Reliable installation requires the seal dimensions to match the existing component precisely. The category currently covers the following size ranges:

A hygienic seal should not be selected solely by its outer diameter. Even small differences in the inner dimension or height can prevent correct positioning or cause uneven compression during installation.
Inspecting and Replacing Hygienic Seals
Hygienic seals are wear components and should be inspected regularly for cracks, deformation, swelling, hardening and permanent compression marks. A damaged surface or incorrectly seated seal can reduce both sealing performance and cleanability.
Before installing a replacement, clean the contact surfaces and check them for damage and old sealing residue. The new gasket should be positioned evenly and must not be twisted, trapped or compressed beyond its intended installation condition.
When the cleaning agent, operating temperature or cleaning process changes, material suitability should be reassessed. EPDM and silicone have different resistance characteristics and should not be exchanged solely because their dimensions are identical.
