Hygienic Chains for Food and Packaging Machinery

Hygienic chains are designed for food-processing, packaging and other production environments where moisture, regular cleaning and corrosion resistance must be considered. MOVET offers stainless steel roller chains, corrosion-protected Neptune chains and lube-free poly-steel chains in different BS and ANSI sizes for clean and reliable industrial drive systems.

Hygienic Chains for Food and Packaging Machinery

Hygienic chains are used in machinery and production systems exposed to moisture, frequent cleaning or increased requirements for corrosion resistance and clean operation. Typical applications include food-processing equipment, beverage production, packaging machinery, pharmaceutical systems and hygienic conveyor drives.

The MOVET range includes stainless steel roller chains, surface-treated industrial chains and lube-free poly-steel chains. The appropriate design depends on the transmitted load, speed, operating temperature, cleaning agents and whether regular external lubrication is possible within the application.

Which Hygienic Roller Chain Suits the Application?

The available chain series differ in material, permissible load, corrosion resistance and lubrication requirements. The following comparison provides initial guidance:

Chain series Design Typical operating conditions Important consideration
TSUBAKI SS Stainless steel roller chain based on SUS304 Moisture, water and selected acidic or alkaline environments Chemical resistance and permissible load must be checked for the application
TSUBAKI AS Reinforced stainless steel ANSI roller chain Corrosive or high-temperature environments with increased mechanical loads Higher strength but slightly lower corrosion resistance than the SS series
TSUBAKI PC Poly-steel chain combining stainless steel and engineering plastic Clean, lightweight and lube-free drive systems Lower temperature and load range than an all-metal roller chain
TSUBAKI Neptune Specially surface-treated carbon steel roller chain Wet environments, alkaline cleaning and adverse outdoor conditions Corrosion-protected but not manufactured entirely from stainless steel

TSUBAKI SS Stainless Steel Roller Chains

The basic components of a TSUBAKI SS roller chain are manufactured from SUS304 stainless steel, with SUS301 used for the spring clips. These corrosion-resistant roller chains are designed for applications involving moisture, water and selected acidic or alkaline operating conditions.

TSUBAKI specifies an operating temperature range from −20 to +400 °C for the SS series. Actual suitability still depends on the cleaning medium, chemical concentration, temperature, exposure time and mechanical load. Stainless steel should therefore not be interpreted as being resistant to every chemical or hygienic cleaning process.

Reinforced TSUBAKI AS Stainless Steel Chains

TSUBAKI AS chains are intended for applications that require corrosion and heat resistance together with greater mechanical performance. The pins, bushes and rollers are manufactured from precipitation-hardened SUS600 stainless steel, while the link plates are made from SUS304.

Compared with the standard SS series, the AS stainless steel roller chain provides increased strength for demanding drive applications. Its corrosion resistance is slightly lower, however, so the AS design should not be selected solely on the basis of load capacity. The operating medium, temperature and required resistance must also be assessed.

Lube-Free Poly-Steel Chains for Clean Drives

TSUBAKI PC chains combine stainless steel pins and outer link plates with inner links made from engineering plastic. This construction enables lube-free operation under suitable conditions and reduces the need for externally applied chain oil in the immediate machine environment.

The poly-steel chain is also approximately 50% lighter and around 5 dB quieter than the corresponding standard roller chain. TSUBAKI specifies an operating temperature range from −20 to +80 °C. Before replacing a conventional steel or stainless steel chain, the permissible load, chain tension and operating conditions must be checked again.

Further sizes and technical information are available under TSUBAKI poly-steel chains .

TSUBAKI Neptune Chains for Wet Cleaning Environments

Neptune chains are based on carbon steel roller chains whose link plates, bushes, pins and rollers receive a special multi-stage surface treatment. The coating is designed to protect the industrial chain against corrosive environmental conditions and the dynamic contact between roller and sprocket.

The series is suitable for wet machinery, alkaline cleaning processes and equipment exposed to adverse environmental conditions. TSUBAKI specifies a working temperature range from −10 to +150 °C. Above +60 °C, a suitable high-temperature lubricant is required.

Neptune chains are corrosion-protected carbon steel chains and should not be confused with roller chains manufactured entirely from stainless steel. Additional versions are available under corrosion-resistant roller chains .

BS and ANSI Roller Chains to DIN 8187 and DIN 8188

MOVET supplies hygienic and corrosion-resistant roller chains in European BS dimensions according to DIN 8187 and American ANSI dimensions according to DIN 8188. The category includes simplex, duplex and triplex chains with different pitches, roller diameters and inner widths.

DIN 8187 includes common BS chain sizes such as 06 B, 08 B, 10 B, 12 B, 16 B and 20 B. ANSI roller chains according to DIN 8188 include sizes such as 25, 35, 40, 50, 60 and 80. Chains with a similar nominal inch pitch are not automatically interchangeable because their remaining dimensions and compatible sprockets may differ.

In addition to the dimensional standard and pitch, the number of strands, roller diameter, inner width and product-specific load capacity must match the existing drive system.

Selecting, Installing and Inspecting Hygienic Chains

Important selection criteria include transmitted power, operating speed, shock loading, temperature, moisture and the cleaning chemicals used. The frequency of cleaning and whether regular external lubrication is permitted also influence the choice between stainless steel, coated and lube-free industrial roller chains.

Connecting links, offset links and other chain components must match the standard, chain size, number of strands and material series. Incorrectly matched connecting components can reduce the reliability and permissible load of the complete chain drive.

Corrosion-resistant and lube-free chains must still be inspected regularly for elongation, damage, deposits, secure connecting links and correct tension. Inclusion in the hygienic chains category does not automatically confirm that every individual article is suitable for direct food contact. Product-specific declarations and technical documentation should therefore be checked for the selected chain.
