Hygienic Belts for Certified Conveyor Systems

Hygienic conveyor belts support safe and efficient product handling in food-processing, packaging and washdown applications. MOVET offers food-grade modular conveyor belts, curved belts, multiflex chains and matching sprockets in different materials, pitches and surface designs for hygienic conveying, cleaning, cooling and draining processes.

Hygienic Conveyor Belts for Food-Processing Applications

Hygienic conveyor belts support reliable product handling in production areas with demanding cleaning, material-resistance and food-safety requirements. Typical applications include the processing of meat, fish, baked goods, dairy products, fruit and vegetables as well as washing, cooling, freezing and packaging systems.

The MOVET range includes hygienic modular conveyor belts and plastic conveyor chains for straight and curved conveyor sections. Different belt pitches, surface designs, materials and levels of open area allow the conveyor solution to be matched to the product and the individual process.

Which Hygienic Conveyor Solution Suits the Application?

The appropriate belt or chain depends on the conveyor layout, conveyed product, required drainage and cleaning conditions. The following comparison provides an initial overview:

Product design Typical characteristics Suitable applications
Straight modular conveyor belts Closed, perforated or open surfaces for linear conveyor sections Transporting, washing, cooling, draining and packaging
Curved modular conveyor belts Side-flexing belt designs for curves and spiral conveyor sections Curved conveyors, cooling spirals, freezing systems and compact production lines
Multiflex conveyor chains Narrow plastic conveyor chains with different pitches and flight options Container washing, crate handling and automated conveyor systems
Conveyor sprockets Drive components matched to the belt series, pitch, number of teeth and shaft Construction, conversion and maintenance of complete conveyor systems

SCANBELT Modular Belts for Hygienic Conveying

SCANBELT modular conveyor belts consist of individual plastic modules connected across the required belt width. This modular construction makes it possible to configure belts in application-specific dimensions and to replace damaged sections without necessarily replacing the complete conveyor belt.

Depending on the belt series, hygienic designs are available with accessible hinge areas, open rod access and belt undersides designed to support effective rinsing. The range covers compact belts for small product transfers as well as wider and stronger designs for demanding conveying duties.

Closed, Perforated or Open Belt Surface?

The surface of a hygienic conveyor belt affects product support, liquid drainage and airflow. Closed surfaces are suitable for small, delicate or loose products that require continuous support across the conveyor width.

Perforated modular belts provide limited drainage while retaining a relatively large supporting surface. More open belt designs allow greater water or airflow and are commonly considered for washing, draining, cooling, drying and freezing processes.

The required open area should be selected according to the process without compromising secure product support. Product dimensions, surface sensitivity, loose particles and the size of the belt openings must therefore be evaluated together.

Hygienic Conveyor Belts Made from PE, PP or POM

The belt material influences temperature resistance, tensile strength, friction, impact behaviour and resistance to cleaning agents. Polyethylene, or PE, is frequently considered for cold applications and processes involving impact loads.

Polypropylene, or PP, offers resistance to many chemicals and cleaning media. Polyoxymethylene, also known as POM or acetal, provides high strength, dimensional stability and favourable running characteristics for many conveyor applications.

Material selection must be based on the actual operating and cleaning temperatures as well as the substances used. Concentration and exposure time are particularly relevant when acidic, alkaline or chlorine-containing cleaning agents are present.

Hygienic Conveying Through Straights, Curves and Inclines

Straight-running hygienic modular belts are suitable for linear conveyor sections and are available with different pitches, surfaces and load capacities. Curved modular belts can combine straight sections and changes of direction within the same conveyor line, reducing the need for multiple transfer points.

Multiflex chains provide another option for compact and complex conveyor layouts. Suitable flights can help guide containers or products through washing, transfer and inclined conveying processes. For incline applications, the angle, product geometry, surface friction and required flight height must be evaluated for the specific installation.

Food Compliance and Cleaning Requirements

Selected hygienic modular belts are supplied with product-specific information relating to FDA, USDA or FSIS requirements. Since material, colour and belt design can differ between individual products, the relevant declaration or technical documentation should always be checked for the exact article selected.

A food-compliant belt material alone does not make the complete conveyor hygienic. Sprockets, connecting rods, flights, side guards, wear strips, supporting structures and transfer points must also remain accessible and suitable for the intended cleaning process.

Cleaning pressure, temperature, chemical concentration and exposure time should be matched to the selected belt material. Regular inspection of hinge areas, belt undersides and connecting rods helps identify residues, wear and mechanical damage at an early stage.

Select and Configure Hygienic Conveyor Belts

Use the product filters to narrow down the available hygienic conveyor belts by belt series, pitch, material, colour, tensile force, surface design and percentage of open area. For modular belts, tensile force is generally stated in relation to one metre of belt width, whereas conveyor-chain load values may be specified differently and should not be compared directly.

Compatible sprockets must match the belt series, pitch, number of teeth, pitch diameter and shaft connection. Belt width, conveyor length, conveyed load, speed, temperature and cleaning conditions must also be included in the technical design.

The MOVET modular belt configurator provides a structured starting point for narrowing down suitable SCANBELT modular belts. MOVET can also assist with special belt widths, flights, side guards and application-specific hygiene or cleaning requirements.
