Stainless steel cap nuts

3-A stainless steel nuts offer high stability and durability in demanding environments. They are resistant to moisture, chemicals and high temperatures and are suitable for mechanical engineering and hygienic areas.

Stainless Steel Cap Nuts for Hygienic Machine Design

Stainless steel cap nuts cover the exposed end of a screw or threaded stud and create a closed finish on the fastening point. Hygienically designed versions are particularly suitable for machinery, conveyor systems and production equipment that must be cleaned regularly.

MOVET supplies hygienic cap nuts made from AISI 304 and AISI 316 stainless steel in thread sizes from M3 to M30. Depending on the version, the nuts have a polished or high-gloss polished surface, a blue silicone gasket and certification according to the 3-A Sanitary Standard or an additional EHEDG specification.

Why Use Hygienic Nuts Instead of Conventional Cap Nuts?

A conventional cap nut covers the end of the screw but is not automatically designed for hygiene-sensitive machine areas. Sharp transitions, inaccessible contact points or unsuitable surfaces may make external cleaning more difficult.

Feature Conventional cap nut Hygienic stainless steel cap nut
Thread protection Closed shape covers the exposed end of the screw Closed shape combined with a cleanable, rounded outer contour
Transition to the mounting surface Depends on the nut, washer and adjoining surface Depending on the model, sealed by a blue silicone gasket
Surface finish Standard surface without specific hygienic optimisation Polished or high-gloss polished stainless steel
Certification Usually supplied without hygiene certification Depending on the article, 3-A or 3-A / EHEDG

Whether a certified hygienic nut is required depends on the hygiene zone, cleaning procedure and installation position. The screw, mounting surface and adjoining components must also be suitable for the intended washdown process.

Select Hygienic Cap Nuts from M3 to M30

The internal thread of the cap nut must correspond to the screw or threaded stud. In addition to the nominal thread diameter, the thread pitch, available internal depth and installation space must be considered.

Selection feature Available options Selection guidance
Thread M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10, M12, M14, M16, M20, M24 and M30 The nut and screw must have the same thread diameter and pitch
Material AISI 304 or AISI 316 stainless steel Select according to corrosion exposure and cleaning chemicals
Surface finish Polished or high-gloss polished Check the product-specific finish and technical drawing
Gasket Depending on the version, with or without a blue silicone gasket Check compatibility with temperature and cleaning media
Certification 3-A Sanitary Standard or 3-A Sanitary Standard / EHEDG Confirm the certification for the exact article selected

External dimensions may differ even when the thread size is identical. For example, the high-gloss polished M8 D20 version has an outside diameter of 20 mm, an overall height of 17 mm and a spanner width of 14 mm. The technical drawing of the selected product remains decisive.

AISI 304 or AISI 316 Stainless Steel Cap Nuts?

Hygienic cap nuts are available in AISI 304 and AISI 316 stainless steel. The suitable material depends on moisture, cleaning agents, operating temperature and the corrosion exposure within the application.

Material Characteristics Typical selection criteria
AISI 304 Stainless steel for many industrial and hygiene-sensitive applications Moderate corrosion exposure and regular external cleaning
AISI 316 Additional material option for more demanding operating conditions Increased exposure to moisture, cleaning chemicals or corrosive media

AISI 316 is not universally resistant to every cleaning or process chemical. Concentration, temperature, exposure time and possible chloride content should be considered during material selection. An AISI 304 version may be sufficient for less aggressive environments.

Hygienic Nuts with Blue Silicone Gaskets

On sealed versions, a blue silicone gasket is positioned between the stainless steel nut and the mounting surface. It supports a defined transition and helps reduce the open gap around the fastening point.

The contrasting blue colour makes the gasket easier to inspect during cleaning and maintenance. Damage, permanent deformation or a missing gasket can therefore be identified more quickly. Compatibility with the cleaning chemicals, temperature and process conditions must be checked before installation.

The gasket can only perform correctly against a suitable and sufficiently even contact surface. Burrs, damage or excessive surface irregularities may prevent uniform contact. The cap nut should therefore be tightened according to the applicable assembly requirements without overloading or permanently deforming the gasket.

3-A- and EHEDG-Certified Hygienic Nuts

Selected MOVET hygienic cap nuts are certified according to the 3-A Sanitary Standard. Additional product versions are listed with a combined 3-A Sanitary Standard / EHEDG specification.

Certification applies to the exact product version. The material, thread size, surface finish and gasket must therefore be compared with the product data and available certification documents.

A certified cap nut does not automatically make the complete fastening point or machine hygienically designed. The screw, mounting surface, threaded connection, installation position and surrounding components must also remain accessible and suitable for the intended cleaning procedure.

Installing and Cleaning Stainless Steel Cap Nuts

Before installation, the internal thread, screw and contact surface should be clean and undamaged. The screw length must be selected so that the screw end does not reach the closed end of the cap nut before the connection has been tightened correctly.

Versions with a silicone gasket require an even contact surface. Misaligned installation or an unsuitable tightening torque can damage the gasket or affect the mechanical connection. The required torque depends on the thread size, screw material, lubrication condition and overall machine design.

During regular cleaning, inspect the stainless steel surface, gasket edge and transition to the mounting surface. Damaged gaskets, corroded threads or deformed nuts should be replaced. Material compatibility should be reassessed whenever the cleaning process or chemicals are changed.

Combine Hygienic Nuts with Matching Stainless Steel Screws

The nut, screw and mounting surface must be coordinated to create a reliable hygienic fastening. Important criteria include the thread size, screw length, available internal depth, material, surface finish and required mechanical load capacity.

Matching certified fasteners are available under hygienic stainless steel screws . Further hygienically designed bolt and screw versions can be found under hygienic bolts .

Hygienic nuts and screws can also be used as part of suitable fastening arrangements for products from the MOVET Waterproof Series . An overview of additional cleanable machine components is available under certified hygienic components .
