Buy roller chains at MOVET

Roller chains from MOVET solve problems in drive technology that can only be solved with difficulty or at the cost of disadvantages with other drive elements. With roller chains, even larger center distances of drive and output can be realized without great technical effort. The slip-free power transmission, as realized for example in motor vehicles with combustion engines by a double roller chain, is also one of the many advantages of roller chains. MOVET is your expert when it comes to roller chains - not only for yard goods, but above all for special solutions.

Roller chains according to DIN 8187/DIN 8188

Roller chains according to DIN 8187 are primarily used as elements for power transmission between two shafts. The roller chain dimensions are almost completely in accordance with the international standard ISO 606:2004. Our MOVET roller chains DIN 8187/DIN 8188 are also available as maintenance-free and corrosion-resistant versions on request. Please contact us if you need information on roller chain dimensions.

Possible applications of roller chains

The roller chain is of great technical importance as an energy- and load-transmitting component. Due to its versatility and most flexible application possibilities, the roller chain is used in a wide variety of industries. Whether in agriculture, industry or food technology: roller chains enable slip-free power transmission, the bridging of greater distances between axles and offer an outstanding efficiency of around 98 %.

Running effects of a roller chain

The outer contour of the sprocket on which a roller chain runs can be compared to a polygon. The number of teeth of the sprocket corresponds to the number of corners of the polygon. The sprocket wheel therefore does not have a constant radius over the circumference, but rather a variable radius. The radius moves from a minimum value - the vertical distance from the center of the sprocket to the lowest point of the polygon - to the maximum value, which is defined by the distance from the center of the sprocket to the corner of the polygon. If the chain now rolls over the sprocket, the varying radius leads to a non-uniformity in the running speed of the chain. This phenomenon is called the polygon effect and occurs even when the sprocket rotates at a constant angular velocity. However, as the number of teeth on the sprocket increases, the polygon effect decreases significantly.

What are the most favorable operating conditions for the use of roller chains?

Roller chains should, whenever possible, be used in horizontal alignment or, deviating from this, in a slightly inclined position. When arranging the drive, make sure that the load strand is located above the chain and the idle strand correspondingly below. This arrangement results in a slight sag of the empty run. The sag should be about 1 % of the center distance between input and output. For larger center distances, it is advisable to support the running of the sagging empty run with guide rails. The load on the running roller chain is pulsating. The load strand is subjected to a tensile load which decreases to zero in the area of the empty strand. The chain is thus relieved of load until it returns to the area of the load strand. The continuous swell load during the run causes the chain to stretch over time. If the elongation is approximately 1.5% of the total chain length, the roller chain must be replaced.

Advantages, features and designs

With roller chains, even larger geometric distances can be overcome without any problems. Tolerances in the center distances can also be easily compensated. Spring-loaded tension rollers, for example, can be used to prevent excessive sagging of the empty strand of a roller chain - and at the same time bring the chain to the necessary tension. If an increased tensile load is to be expected, the use of a multiple roller chain is necessary. Flexibility is undoubtedly one of the greatest advantages of a roller chain.
